They made the announcement, "Everybody turn off and put away your electronic devices" he didn't put his iPhone away, a flight attendant came over and told him to turn it off and put it away and he said it was on airplane mode, she said turn it off and put it away and he argued with her, i couldn't quite hear from where I was. Then the pilot made an announcement over the speakers "phones in airplane mode still aren't good enough, please turn them off and stow them or we will take them from you." Schimmel then yelled out "iPhones don't ever really turn off"

no. no its not. its rude and problematic when the kid is supposed to be the President of the robotics organization at Ransom.

not really. maybe if it was some random person, but if it was somebody I knew, it wouldn't be funny.

Well, if you're still that annoyed with him you can still use the whole officer removal protocol in the charter. It doesn't change all that much at this point, but it may illustrate a pretty stark point to Schimmel.

Oh and if anyone was wondering why they ask you to turn off all electronics on the runway (including devices that don't have any kind of wireless transmitter) is apparently the EM field from a small hand-held device could cause havoc with the plane's control cables by inducing a current in them if there is any damage to the shielding around the cables near your seat.

That's what I thought. Schimmel was saying how they mythbusted the idea that a cell phone can screw with the navigation on a plane, but i was pretty sure that in take off and landing it had more to do with the emf that the devices create screwing with cables or something inside the plane and not the navigation systems.

I mean any idiot could figure out where he's trying to go while still on the ground or landing, its kind of obvious, and if you don't know, I'd imaging you could have the control tower tell you

well, this is more "if the wrong wire is exposed, you will flip the damn plane by accidentally activating the hydraulics."

thats my point, there would be no point in banning electronic use on take off and landing if it had anything to do with screwing with the navigation system.

From what i remember of the mythbusters episode i think they said that cell phones had the slight possibility of causeing interference between plane and tower communication, its not the fact of using the control tower to know where you are, but to know where every one else is and what they are doing
but idk i dont know much about this at all lol

but that's not the reason why you have to turn them completely off, that would be a reason why you have to turn them on airplane mode or off. but the emf thing makes a lot more sense.

For the record, I've been on airplanes my entire life, and I haven't turned off an electronic device during take-off or landing since I was 9, and I haven't been caught in a fiery ball of death yet, and don't plan to any time soon.. That includes gameboy's, cell phones, ipods, laptops, and miscellaneous electronic devices... So yea.. just my 2 cents!

The point is that it's a safety precaution; if everything on the plane is working in the way it's supposed to be working, leaving an electronic device on shouldn't make a difference, but just in case there is something wrong, something that would only be affected by some sort of electronic device being on, that is only used for take off and landing, and it's something somewhat difficult to detect, they want you to turn the devices off.

I don't understand how I haven't posted this one yet...

Back in my junior year at Ransom (FOUR YEARS AGO Shocked), I was working on getting a robot called Coriolis (later handed off to a freshman and named Blitzkrieg) built. It was supposed to have counter-rotating saw blades as the weapon, to improve cutting ability and minimize energy lost by bouncing off the other robot. How this was intended to be driven was via two belts that ran down to pulleys on weapon motors mounted in the rear of the robot. I was working on making some nylon pulleys from home depot suitable for mounting, starting by enlarging the diameter of the center hole for the output shaft. So, in a little bit of a hurry I took one of these pulleys in my left hand [without a glove], held it down on the drill press, and started to drill out the pulley. About one second later, the pulley suddenly grips to the drill bit, and begins spinning - dragging ragged injection-molding edges on the pulley at ludicrous speeds across my thumb, index, and middle fingers. Apparently, it not only slashed my fingers but cauterized the wounds from the friction-induced heat. Let's just say I wasn't able to work on the robot for the next several days until I could grip something without holding back a scream, and Coriolis didn't make it to regionals that year. Fortunately, despite the pain I don't really have any visible scars from the event, just the knowledge that cuts + burns = a new and interesting variety of pain.
