Hey everyone, i have never used uhmw and was just curious to how well uhmw holds threads? Can i use a machine screw, self tapping, or sheet metal screws?

Has anyone given these a try?

uhmw is really soft, which means you need really coarse threads. Trilobular plastite screws probably work the best - they're self-tapping screws specifically designed for use in plastic, with a very coarse thread with a special profile for gripping plastic. Sheet metal screws will not work the same.

Alex,

Use an insert with a flanged back if you are going to thread UHWM..... It is too soft to thread directly into..... It is good for bolting through and into something else but I would not thread it directly...... use a flanged back something like a tee nut for wood and insert it through the plastic.... it will hold tight and not elong if tight
