Mounting a Brushless backwards?

Looking at maybe mounting a brushless Weapon motor Backwards.....

I dont want to leave the end of the motor unsupported so I am thinking of either flipping the gearing around and putting the 1/4 inch nub against the weapon motor and sandwiching it within a bearing between the frame.....

OR.... Flipping the motor around and extending the arm out the back end of the motor and supporting the front and back of the weapon motor but leaving the gearing unsupported..

Anyone ever tried it?????

A photo would help a lot, but I'm guessing that the basic idea is to use the outrunner body for driving something, rather than the shaft.

If so, I have never seen this NOT work, so I'd say go for it.

Will Bales built a crude but darn effective vertical disc (WoodyNator) that ran on two DeWalts pretty much like you drew (i.e. cantilevered drive pulley), which worked fine. Since the distance from the motor housing to the pulley was relatively short, it never came close to bending the 5mm shaft.

However, I think your point is that an outrunner will only have bearings in the segment indicated with the cone in your first sketch, leaving much of the shaft in both directions unsupported. (the DeWalt, being a boring old brushed motor, had bearings at both ends of the motor, of course).

I think you could easily put a bearing around the nub (at the spinning end of the outrunner body) to give the motor support at both ends, and just don't worry about the cantilevered pulley--this would be effectively the same as the WoodyNator.

I have never mounted the gearing without supporting it at the end.... It makes me a little nervous to go with a design like this.... I have seen it mounted opposite (Humdinger) and it worked...

Any experience?

It will be fine, just try to support the motor as best as you can. Redemptions brushless was only support with the default mounting screws and it held up well. STill wiggled loose, but a simple rear mount would have fixed that.

both shockwaves used outrunners, only mounted by regular mounting screws

we have always supported the gear shaft but i know Bloomsburg doesnt support the gear shaft ends. I talked to them about it and they said they have never had a problem

A plan was to put a bearing on the nub on the end of the can like in picture number two, havent used an outrunner since then lol

Not all outrunners are created equal...some will be better suited than others...in any case I personally prefer at least 2 support points. jmho

how will the bearing on the back end help the load on the shaft in your second drawing? I think the first option would probably be better...

I was thinking the same thing but with the bearing, it can be supported on both ends and maybe a little more reliable?????
Like I said, I am just looking at different ways of mounting a brushless.....
