PostSubject: 15 lb Battlebots arena   Wed Mar 17, 2010 1:47 pm

Just out of curiosity, I started looking up pricing on building a 15 lb arena. Does this sound right to you guys?

Arena specs: 6' x 6' x 8'
1/2" thick steel floor
Plus various supports to hold it up depending on your design.

A 1' square piece off of steel will cost about $70 and a 4' square piece of lexan about $360.

36x70 + 16x360 = $8280

Does that sound right? That doesn't even include hardware or any supports for the cage.
How would you go about building one of these at that price?

firstly...6' x 6' is very small

10' x 10' is more common....the one being used for this years botsiq nat's is only 8' x 8' and it is kind of small for 15's

I would say 10' square minmum and probably more like 12' would be a decent size

10'x10'x'8 foot is about what the yellow bumpered ones are i believe.
That one would be tiny, its a big insect arena though.
12x12 even better
I think nerc's 16x16 is the best

Definately 16X 16 is ideal for 12-15-30 lbers anything over 12X12

I find that even the Yellow bumper IQ ones are a foot or 2 too small.

An ideal arena would be one that does not have metal bumpers.

Things are bent more when launched into a wall and the more damage the less fighting for some teams.

You always want more damage from a hit instead of from hitting the wall. (spectators will enjoy this also)

A 10X10 would be good for 1's and 3's but you could 6X6 for anything less than 3lb's

Metal Floor's ???? Not really needed but it does help on replacing them later and less warpage from set-up to set-up.

The main thing looked at is the thickness of the walls..

Your prices do look to be accurate!

The Octagon is the way to go. The arena that the NY NTMA had at R3 was really nice, but had a wooden floor. The one at Plymouth North - the same one they brought to the Bots IQ/Robots World Wide 2007 National in Miami was the same one. It has hosted a number of great event and provides great action. No corners, so there is a lot of driving space for the size. It also maximizes the lexan use and metal floor. They used a replaceable bumper to protect the lexan at the base.

This should be the model we should look at developing. It packs up easy and is transportable. This is by far the best arena around.

Mr. bastoni, from plymouth has all the cads and stuff because it was the kids from his school that designed the thing, or atleast that was the story i got because the thing has been around since before my freshman year.

Um, hey Will. You don't by any chance use 2009-2010's version of Solidsworks do you? Cause I'm running 2008-2009 and I can't open any of those files. Should I upgrade to 2010? I'd really rather not.

Nah it's ok, just making sure I had the right solution before I did anything.
I'm thinking of upgrading to 2010 Professional. Forget this student edition crap.

Hmmm, now how to procure a professional license for free. MUAHAHAHAHAH! Twisted Evil

Btw, what do you mean breaking your back? I've never asked you for anything before. ...well aside from building more awesome toys for me to use as target practice. Crazy spinning balls of fire don't scare me one bit. Sleep
