| I've had this idea in my head for a long while now, I'm finally cadding it up. its a bit more of a private bot than an LS bot. The idea is a ring spinner that uses the friction system that has been working so well in various FBS bots. I'm actually essentially taking my FBS design and making it invertible, the only difference is the shell and mounting hardware. I might actually be a bit lighter this way. I cant really describe it but I will have cads tonight or tommorow |

| PRELIMINARY DRAWINGS LEMME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK INTERNAL LAYOUT: sHELL: BASICALLY 2WD BOT WHEEL IN THAT CENTER CUT OUT WEAPON IS COMPRISED OF 1/4'' THICK WALL 12'' OD STEEL TUBE WITH ALUMINUM LIPS BOLTED INTO TOP AND BOTTOM, THE TOP HAS TWO AXI'S WITH WHEELS PRESSED AGAINST IT WHILE THE BOTTOM HAS TO IDLER WHEELS PRESSED AGAINST IT TO MAINTAIN TENSION AND STABILITY. THE LITTLE CIRCLES ARE NOT POWERED THEY ARE JUST TO KEEP THE SHELL IN PLACE. SORRY FOR THE CAPS |

| Why not go experimental and build a melty??? Carrolton in Miami started on one, but it never made it to nat's.... Not sure about bolting alu pieces to 1/4" wall steel....max size screw would be maybe 8-32's 10's would be wishful. blade(s) ??? coming soon..... _________________ Ready to Rumble combat robots Advisor to MLEC BotsIQ team...2010 BotsIQ champions (1st and 2nd places) Spinning Tortoise...Possibly the World's first Brushless Melty!! 2010 Franklin Cup winner Vapor bots..Ho

| Bearing setup is somewhat similiar to ours but we ran a 3/8 frame inside to make the bearing supports more rigid...
The Ring lip is only needed on one side (bottom) instead of both.
Is the center open?????
We went with 4 Bearings on the H Frame Ends and brought 2 - 1/2 inch pieces off the middle of the H Frame at 90 Degree to throw in 2 more supports on the longer sides of the frame...
This gave us a total of 6 1" bearings running on 3/8 5850 Precision Shafts.
A Pretty rigid setup and it will hold up against a good rum but way too intense when gyro is involved...
Hard to Drive (uncontrollable) when spinning..
Our Ring was 7/8 by 3 wide 6061..

| I think it was Ziggo that used a wok. Whenever I hear Ziggy I think of the SHW pneumatic flipper. |

| Working on my MELTY-drive shell spinner freak-of-nature bot, I think I've found a way to restrain ring spinners for lightweight robots. If your shell has a T cross-section (the top of the T being the outer wall), you can avoid contact wheels entirely if you use properly restrained ball bearings (not ball bearing races, just the little metal spheres). Not sure how well this would work on larger robots, they may wear too quickly under greater stress & weight. _________________ Georgia Institute of Technology - Mechanical Engineering RoboJackets Battlebots Team - Weapons Design Team Leader 09-10 President of RE Robotics 2005-2007

| Decided to shelf the melty part of the project for now; I might try it as an upgrade later. However: 6" Ring OD, 6.75" with the teeth [the whole thing is 1" tall]. That might get a bit smaller (weight is a little tight at the moment, but I've got plenty of space to work with). The ring itself is aluminum with two steel teeth, and the chassis is currently UHMW. The ring is supported by thirty 0.125" ball bearings held by the chassis & interior ring geometry - I have yet to decide on the material, although steel is a likely bet (even though it'll grind the chassis & ring all to hell, I suspect it'll work fine for the expected operational life of the robot). I'm looking at a plain two-wheel drive, with a small brushless outrunner to drive the ring itself. The outrunner will be mounted on a spring-loaded arm (a rubber band may be sufficient for that purpose) and contact the interior ring geometry directly. _________________ Georgia Institute of Technology - Mechanical Engineering RoboJackets Battlebots Team - Weapons Design Team Leader 09-10 President of RE Robotics 2005-2007
