Why has tornado mini dropped out of the BotsIQ event? It was listed and now it's gone... any reasons?

Just trying to figure out how many teams are actually going to travel to Miami and pay $300 per robot of a so called "National" event.

I'm really frustrated over the short time frame this whole event had...

Rant warning--the following represent my personal views, presented as part of a discussion--they are not meant to be representative of anyone else or any organization, and I welcome opposing points of view

Yes, the frustration is running high--and deservedly so.

The other night I was at a meeting in which Nola said that what she wanted was to set a date and announce a location for 2011 while at the 2010 event. She has heard us loud and clear that the short notice, changing plans, and general disorganization is hurting the sport and literally makes it impossible for schools to attend.

When she said this I stood up and applauded. A year's notice is exactly what we need. If a stable event can be established, then it will grow, but the current state of things is intolerable.

I do think that putting BBIQ "Nationals" in Miami every year favors Miami teams, (and that is unfair) but frankly it is a less important issue than the need for a consistent event. Moving around is maybe something that can be looked at if the event is stabilized for a few years, but losing the confidence of teams is a cost that cannot be afforded. (and if it does move, it needs to be set up at a year in advance)

I can say with great assurance that there WILL BE an event in Miami April 14-18, 2010. The space is rented and the arenas are either here or on their way. Money is being spent to make it happen, and generally that is the 'point of no return' for any event. I really hope to see most of you there, but I certainly understand many of the reasons you may not attend.

And I am of the opinion that "red/blue" is not gonna happen, but I could be wrong about that. I think it is an idea born of good intentions, but ultimately is unworkable.

Rant off.

Very well stated... And thanks for the update. You see, if you are NOT in Florida, you don't get to go to the informational meetings. Thus we are twice removed from any decision making. These message boards are the only way we get any information on anything.

I wish you luck, but having the event in a school gym like Miami Mayhem would have been a wiser investment. I mean think about how large the tent was last year. The mini robots were basically a side show last year. We were in a small tent with one light above the semi transparent lexan arena. Since we only had a small tent last year, any venue would work - be it a gym, empty store front or vacant building for that matter.

Announcing the 2011 National event before September is key. The location should rotate if possible. There are enough mini arenas in various parts of the country to limit transportation expenditures. Our largest expenditure every year is registration fees and getting to the venue. Those schools in Miami have not had to pay those expenses for 3 of the past 4 years.

Unfortunately, I don't see that many school being able to make the journey down this year. Basically the biggest expenditure is the middle weight robots. Every year there have been fewer and fewer of these being made due to price and transporting the robots to the competitions. And looking at the buildersDB there are only 4 total middle weight robots registered. In two more weeks those robots will need to be shipped to get there in time without paying huge shipping bill...

In Pennsylvania, they hold their state event with over 60 teams at a mall in two days at no cost from the mall at all... Why rent a building?

I agree with Marshall about the 120's being the most challenging part of the whole deal, both from the perspective of the schools and the side of the event coordinators. The only reason "Nationals" cannot happen in a gym is that there is not enough room for the 120 arena, (plus pits, plus the Mini arena.)

I have always thought the 15/12/Mini class was the best overall--enough power for real excitement, but affordable. IIRC, Marshall and I both made a strong case for this at a meeting during Nationals last year, and were pretty much shut down by BattleBots (Not to be confused with BBIQ) folks with the reasoning that the 120's were as small as you could go and still impress 'laymen.'

With which I disagree strongly--anyone who has seen a good Mini class match can tell you that it doesn't matter if it's big or little, when the darn things throw each other around the arena, it gets attention. (Fireballs are a little 'over the top,' of course Very Happy )

I also think that anyone who is holding out for laymen to actually fork over money to start funding these things is in a dreamworld--it is either a hobby or an educational construct, and either way the participants and sponsors are the only ones who are ever gonna foot the bill. JMO.

Oh, to clarify-- actually, the event this year is in an empty storefront (Circuit City closed in the mall). Also I may have used the word 'rented' incorrectly--I don't know if BBIQ is paying anything or not.

I do know that money is being spent to get a 120 arena to Miami and 'battle ready,' and that's the money I was speaking of, really.

with only 3 120's registered to date...it hardly seems worth setting up the big arena????

hope the numbers grow...and some out of towners decide to attend....

BotsIQ should consider a 3 lbs. class...much more affordable for more schools to participate...just a thought
