I am certain that he can make a wedge from that at under 12 lbs. Only because we did it.

Heck, Ransom's first version of X-contamination (which did run right at 15lbs) used two Drill Motor/Gearbox setups for drive, Two Victor 883's, 8 inch wheelchair wheels, one drill battery (in the plastic casing!), two Johnson Gearmotors for the weapon, a baseplate made of masonite, motor supports of MDF, and had an ISSAC 16 (anyone remember those?) controller.

Another of our 'bots which went by a variety of names ran on two drillmotor/gearboxes, had 3 wheels (3in Colsons), two 6-cell NiMH 3000mah packs, an 1/8 inch aluminum frame and was covered in 1/16 inch spring steel. It weighed less than 9 pounds--we actually added weight to improve traction.

If he uses BB ESCs and a Spektrum BR6000, he could use Colson's, make the body of steel, and perhaps still make weight using the nicads that came with the drill.

Those batteries don't charge so well, though.

he has this thing about trying to torment people....

sorta kinda, i think i have one some where at home lol
but im never home either

Im still not sure how i want to connect the frame pieces
one bolt straight threw like a pin seems like a terrible idea and im not very crazy about threading into the uhmw Question

On the other hand, if your goal is to make the least expensive robot around, this is an effective way to go. I think any startup team could benefit from doing just exactly what you've proposed as a first bot.

Also, Cody, if you want some hints on how to use those gearboxes (they are a pain to mount, and you gotta have tricks to secure the ringgear), I have had more experience with them than I ever really wanted.

Again you've hit the nail right on the head! haha I kinda wanna (try atleast) build an inexpensive bot thats is competitive since all we here anymore is people crying cause its not fair

I think i can do this for close to 300 dollars

I've already taken the motor apart and plan on doing the o-ring hack to lock the gearbox and locktite everything while its apart but i would appreciate any other tips you might have

Right now i plan on contersinking the small part of the gearbox into the frame, the widest part will be flush to the frame with another piece of 1/2" UHMW supporting the motor and squezzing the gearbox to the other frame rail

I just bought a whole bunch of random pieces of UHMW off ebay for 37 bucks with shipping ($11)

Total- $57
i plan on buying atleast 2 more drills if not three so ill have an extra motor and battery pack(maybe 2)

Still need to find steel, order ESCs, tx/rx, colsons, and make some wheel hubs since kitbots prices are ridiculous haha

I couldn't figure out how much shipping was though.

decided to use binding posts in the UHMW frame and nut strip to attach the armor

i might need A123s just to make 15lbs lol

ive never read the tutorial actually

I was putting something together at work and it gave me the idea. Idk if anyones ever used them before in bots but i thnk it might be my best bet for the frame without out threading the UHMW. The steel will be nut stripped to the frame which makes me feel a little bit better about doing it like this

When ever i get time I think im going to do a slight redisgn of the frame to tighten the motors closer to each other and change the one cross rail to 1/2 in UHMW to save a little space and weight

I've used "weld nuts" to hold my beetle together.

buy some counter sinks (think thats what there called) you can pick them up at your local hard ware store, there just like the weld nuts but with three burs the dig into the uhmw keeping it from rotating when you tighten them. i used them on the brick i build for a kid https://2img.net/h/i363.photobucket.com/albums/oo76/botman64/design%20scraps/100_3205.jpg

Those binding posts look okay, but remember - UHMW is really soft. You may want to use washers in addition to the posts to make the diameter of the flanges bigger, otherwise you risk the post pulling through a distorted hole at some point...
