| Realistic: Anything with a chassis that can survive and remain operational after being in the ring with them for three minutes is a winner in my book.
Slightly Less Realistic: for big hits, nothing beats a disk. There is, however, the issue of drivability. In the most extreme cases, a robot may even need a mass rotating in the opposite direction of the disk to counteract the rotation (hmm... would a horizontal spinning mass be able to generate enough gyroscopic force to counter the gyroscopic force of a vertical disk during turns? I should look into this...).
Pie in the Sky: Well, no one has really ever made a crusher worth a ShamWOW! in recent memory, but I'll say a crusher anyways. It'd have to be a freak hybrid between a crusher and a manipulator though in the lower weights, because you have to catch the robot before doing anything to it. Despite the difficulty involved, I'd say if you made the absolute simplest manipulator/gripper possible and added a good worm-driven piercing tip, it would work.

| No, simpler: the manipulator is spring-actuated, very much like a mousetrap. It can be reeled back during the crusher's retraction phase. The crusher is partly mounted to the manipulator, so it is brought physically closer to the piercing surface, increasing actuation time for greater hole/gash depth (remember, top gripping time = 20 seconds under most rules). | |

Any more questions? For all of them? If you can implement standard driving into it....Yes strategy..very little create as much ke as possible and make contact. If the spin stops and you're going to get cornered, switch to regular drive mode and get out of there Spin it up and try again. Properly built (if that's possible) what's gonna touch you?

| Would a stiff wire brush shoved into the exposed drum belt tear it up? (Humdinger and F-15)
Horizontal spinning bar might be able to do some damage to Humdinger.
A carefully designed chucker, with a scoop that could get under the drum/beater of either Humdinger or F-15 might also be effective. It would have to be really tough, and able to function inverted.
I kinda have to go with rjw overall--a really good FBS or Melty might have a chance. The problem is that anything with a vertical axis of rotation will fly just as far as it's opponent in a hit, while drums and disks have the ground to keep them steady. Also, a little tilt, and next thing you know you've got a dancing top instead of a battlebot.
Jeff--don't like the gyro of a disk? Try two, spinning in opposite directions, one on front, one on back. Much easier to drive, and you can attack backwards! Good luck making weight tho. . . (I wanna build a DOUBLE DRUM for just this reason)
