I need to make a lightweight bracket for something on my antweight, and all I have to work with is 1/16" 2024 aluminum. I know 2024 isn't easy to bend (I just tried to see if it would work and the piece broke) but is there a way to make bending 1/16" 2024 at a 90 degree angle possible? Would heating it up with a butane torch do any good, or should I just spend the money on a different alloy and if so, which one?

not sure about 2024, but other alloys like 7075 don't like to be bent either.

It aslo depends on the actual angle and a larger radius in the bend could help.

6061 bends easily, but again tight radius usually means fracture. If you need a tight 90, perhaps a piece of angle would be more suitable

heat it up. I've heated up 2024 and 7075 with a propane torch and bent it 90 degrees no problem.

**Just be careful! As you may know, Aluminum doesn't change color when it heats up. It just turns into a puddle of molten aluminum on the floor without ever changing color like steel does.

I'm with Richard on this one--buy some angle. Yeh, you may be able to heat it and bend it, but it won't be as strong. A good extruded angle stock will be simpler and stronger.

I ended up using a 1/32" sheet of pure aluminum. It worked perfectly

Pure aluminum? Where did you find that?

1100 Aluminum from Mcmaster, so technically it's only 99% aluminum. I probably could've gotten it at Alro Metals, but it was only 5 bucks and I was already ordering some stuff...
