Its true!!

Unfortunatly I dont think we will be coming down to miami this year. I actually have a somewhat functional team now and they have decided to go NRL this year.

But that means we are free to come to MOTORAMA. Unfortunatly my advisor only agrees to register to these events after a few others have been registered. So once you guys do it, we will.

It looks like Catasauqua High School will be bringing 3 robots and we are rather firm with our 3 and we might be registering four depending on the number of students. We will be on the DataBase by the middle of next week. Since school operate under different schedules than individuals do it usually takes a little bit longer to get in the system.

Motorama will be happening with a number of high caliber teams. The funny thing is, I can register our three robots and it will be only half as expensive as the registration fee of the Miami event. In addition, we will be in a larger arena, not a 10' x 10' testing arena.

IQ needs to drop the 120lbs robots and just have mini's. The major expense of the event is the larger robots and that arena. The mini arena was horrible in 2009 and 2008. The last good arena was the octagon brought down by Plymouth.

The bracket will begin to fill up next week... ;-)

Personally, I think that a wood floor is a total joke....jmo

Some bots are just totally NOT meant for a wood floor, but if you are in that area of the country, then building for Fi and Moto would be the obvious way to go.

What did they do to it? Mike Bastoni (spelling?) was pretty impressed when we put a bot off the cieling and blew a panel out at nationals, he said he had some plans for it after that happened.

We were hoping to have gone to the National NRL event last summer, but the date and location made it impossible for us to make it there. Kansas City is not the cheapest town to fly into and hotels were extremely expensive. In addition, we had a number of students that could not attend due to family vacation schedules and college classes during that part of the summer.

Other than the national event, we can't attend the SWPA event since they don't allow those that are not part of their chapter of the NTMA participate. The one year we did get to be part of your event was the year there was an opening in a bracket no one wanted to fill it because of Plum's robots...lol. You guys seemed to have that bracket locked. Very Happy . That was a great tournament...

Other NTMA events have opened their door to us, but there aren't that many available. Dayton (DTMA) have allowed us to participate and a number of years ago, Rochester, NY had an event, R3, that was open to everyone. Plymouth North HS have also hosted events at their school that have been open to everyone. Those have been some of the most competitive events we have been to.

The Miami group seems to have multiple events, I just can't figure out why the other events they have the registration is very reasonable, but the so called "national" event is 6X that price to participate. Where do teams get $1800 to register 6 mini robots? I guess since Miami teams don't have transportation or lodging costs, the high registration fees are not all that bad...

MLEC managed to scrape together registration fees, but not much more.

thankfully 5 of the 6 bots require very little in the way of repairs.

the sixth may not be ready in time.

Fortunately, we have been getting 2 or 3 other events per year. While inexpensive, the numbers have been rather small.

The Miami Dade Youth Fair is free to ALL that wish to attend...can't get much better than that!!

If, like yourself and others, these events required massive travelling expenses, I doubt that MLEC could attend, in that funding is pretty much at an all time low....

I wish that something would give, so that many more could participate....before the whole thing just disappears.

MLEC is the only publice HS that attends all but the youth fair, which normally attracts 1 or 2 other public schools. Any others are private schools, which have been keeping this alive so far.

Does anyone else think that the future of educational combat robots on a national level looks somewhat grim?

BotsIQ national seems to be pretty grim. The NTMA is putting an effort into the NRL nationals by donating money to the top teams of the regional competitions to help cover expenses towards going to where ever the NRL national is. While it only helps a few teams it does ensure a decent competition.
There were several teams from PA that made it to kansas city last year and most of them had atleast one vehicle make the trip with bots and tools (really long drive but still alot of fun). Kansas City was a wierd place to have the competition but I really enjoyed all the things there was to do with the SkillsUSA competition, unlike miami where I spent a week inside a convention center and the only sun i saw was walking down the street to get lunch.

Yes and no

When I came down last year for "nationals" i got the same impression that most of the teams were from private schools (ransom, columbus, gulliver, and carrolton)

The 120 class was lacking, and almost all from miami.

I honestly agree with marsh368 the 120 class should be dropped, lately it has been serving so few. and quite honestly i know a few of the robots that used to compete in the 120 class are switching to robogames. Bay Path robotics which took first and second last year and also second the year copperhead 3 won, will be taking their 2 robots to robogames instead. The blender which is could be competing in the college level is now going to robogames as well.

With out the 120's teams down thier could focus on the 15's and use their time and money for larger 15 pound events. It would be great to see the miami teams come to the NRL nationals this year.

BotsIQ and Nola are great, but they have honestly only been able to satisfy the needs of the miami area.

The future for national educational combat robotics looks a little on the grim side for BOts IQ, but i believe that the NRL is getting stronger.

I have to agree that some of the arenas up north are much nicer than the 8 x 8 used down here.

The youth fair would be a great place to hold a national event, in that entry fees are nill.

Something needs to be done to try and have at least ONE truly national event. Otherwise, a large number of pretty good robots will be ignored.

Who has a workable solution to all this?

If the NRL has their act much more together than the local Miami group, perhaps they could have a qualifier down here and/or entice some of the Miami schools to travel.

Robogames seems to have their act together , but I don't see a 15 pound event being held anytime soon.

Lead the Way RJW,

Idk if your team has already paid their dues for the BBIQ tournament already

If not, consider holding out until the NRL announces the details of thier National event, and see if it would be in anyway feasible for your team to go...

It may be right up your ally, from the details we have been given the event will be in april at a nasa facility, now this to me most probably means houston, or florida...

I completly agree that the miami group should be enticed to go, You have all the contacts down their...

send out the emails to the fellow teacher over at Ransom, Carrolton, COlumbus, and gulliver.

If your team leads the way and lets them know they should follow...

.......

And i wasn't suggesting the robogames be the national event...

i was simply saying that teams that want to fight 120's should do so there

and the 15's should fight at NRL, or bots IQ DEPENDING ON WHAT YOU CHOOSE.

2 problems....

1) Lipos in all bots, with littlechance of converting this year

2) I am not in charge, just an advisor. I think that at the moment, we need to support the local competition, as long as it exists.

Next year might be different, who knows?

NTMA already tried in miami, they originally were the financial support to BotsIQ but Nola was set to her ways which werent the same as what the NTMA wanted, from what I was told it even involved lawsuits. This is the reason why there was "Bots Worlwide" at one point.
