Can outrunners take a constant side load to the can? I see them in direct drive weapons where they obviously take large impacts, but my question is whether or not the Can could be used as the "pulley" in an inverted timing belt setup? The drum would have a slight groove in it to keep the belt centered.

People do this all the time. The motors probably aren't made for this, and if so it wouldn't last forever. Furthermore there's going to be a limit on how much each motor can handle. But it does work.

Some people will also make an 'outrigger' bearing support to go on the normally-unsupported end, which undoubtedly helps.

I would also imagine that keeping the belt near the fixed end, at a distance less than or equal to the shaft length would keep forces at or near the design limits, just on the opposite side of the built in bearings.

I did this once, with the outrigger bearing, to drive a vacuum fan and it worked just fine (only I had to add a pulley around the motor to get the speed ratio I desired.)

im sure supporting the end of the can would help alot. I saw a team mount a pulley to the back of a can but i dont think it really worked the well because of the toruqu created
