I have some old 18v harbor freight drill's that I want to hack into 15 lb drive gearbox's.
I took the drill apart and I also took the set screw out of the chuck.
But when I try to turn the chuck counter clockwise to take it off it just spins.
Is there a way to take it off that I'm missing?

It kinda sucks to do. Theres a left hand threaded screw in the center of the chuck you have to take out and i think your supposed to be able to put an allen key in the chuck and hit the allen key with a hammer to break it loose. I didnt work that easily for me though, I think i ended up using a bench vise and a pair of vise grips

It is much easier with the drill together, but I made the same mistake you did the first few times, so don't feel bad.

First question, have you gotten the reverse thread screw out yet? If not, the main thing is to be careful NOT to strip out the phillips head. I would put the chuck in a vise (don't worry about messing it up--you don't want it anyway) then use a standard phillips head screwdriver, but push like crazy on it as you turn it clockwise. In fact, if you can put it in the vise in such a way that the screwdriver will need to come in directly from above, you can get your weight on the screwdriver and have someone else turn it.

If the screw is out already: It is probably going to be easiest to put the casing back on the drill motor, even if it means you have to cut an opening to feed the motor wires out so you can power the thing to assist in removing the chuck. You don't need to put everything back in, just the part with the motor, and the only reason you have to do this is that there isn't a good way to hold the motor assembly without risking damage. I like the hex key trick he uses in the video, because it imparts an impulse (sudden, high force over a short distance/time) to 'break' the chuck loose. I think if he had swung the aluminum bar to collide with the moving key, it would have worked even with the dead battery.

Your biggest problem is that the drills had been used already, which tends to tighten them up--brand new ones are much easier to remove the chuck.

Worse comes to worse, you can do what I did before I figured out the screw was reverse thread--cut the chuck apart with a dremel tool or side grinder--you risk damaging the gearbox output shaft, but if you work carefully and try to 'crack' it apart it could work OK. To do this, cut almost to the shaft on one side of the chuck, then the same on the opposite side, stick a wedge (big flathead screwdriver, cold chisel, etc) into one cut and drive it in. If the chuck doesn't break apart/off from that, then drive another wedge into the other cut.

Good luck.
