Tombstone does look pretty sick

Im really looking forward to seeing Vault to, altough its not in my top.
Marc Devidts and Victor Soto among others are the team building it, and from seeing what each have prodused in the past really, im excited to see there take on a flipper

i saw a test of vault, at about 1/8 the psi (they were manually switching it from an air compressor), and it was pretty impressive. However, they're planning on using so much pressure that I'd be worried about them ripping themselves apart if they miss a flip, because the stop for the flipper arm is all mechanical.
But it looks good... we saw them working on it at Starbot.

PostSubject: Re: 2009 Battlebots champion   Mon Apr 20, 2009 4:42 pm

Since I'm not attending the competition...

My Picks for the 2009 High School Middleweight Championship [and Robot Analysis]

Dark Horses:

BABS - made by the well-known Team Falcon, BABS is their first robot in a few years. Team Falcon works closely with Team Whyachi, so this one has the potential to be a show-stopper (if it holds up).

Slingshot - An impressive looking pneumatic flipper, it could potentially even take out the best spinners in the brackets. The only question is if it's durable enough to take some hard hits, and whether it's driver is skilled enough to make good use of his limited pressure supply.

The Devastator - A mean looking drum/wedge, from the looks of their test footage the team's been hard at work and will have had plenty of time to work out the kinks in their robot. Unfortunately, it is non-invertible, putting limits on how much of a gyroscopic effect they can safely handle.

The Winning Bracket:

Blender - Back for another try at the championship, this year's modifications include a new bar-shell for added flexibility against different opponents that may give it the edge it needs. That, coupled with one of the most robust spinner designs out there makes Blender one of the top robots in the field. Currently, its only weakness is an enclosed drive system, making it marginally easier to immobilize on the arena than other robots might be.

Copperhead - The current reigning champion has what is probably the best drum in the weight class. While its overall design may not seem especially polished compared to robots like Blender, its simplicity results in exceptional resilience. Currently, its main weakness is its exposed wheels.

SpiderPig - A newcomer in every sense, this robot is a glutton for punishment. The combined effect of a super-compact design, powerful drive system, one of the most heavily over-designed chassis and armor layouts in the entire competition, and two prototype vacuum units presents a unique challenge to the competition. Since this is the first 120 pound robot that RE Robotics has ever fielded, there's a lot of uncertainty about how it will perform. Currently its main weakness is a strategy of running head-on into another robot's weapons, which if done improperly could make it look like poor driving on the part of SpiderPig to the judges.

I'm not so sure about spiderpig....personally I think that multiple little geaboses may not be such a good idea, but I hopeI am wrong.

2 things..If it takes air and comes down on a single axle......I think the wheels will leave town along with possibly some gearboxes or motors.

Also, if some motors die, then it will be dragging those wheels, etc around....

I hope it does well...after all it is a Florida robot and it looks like it has 6 Lipo packs....!!!

Yeah, I personally haven't seen what their gearboxes or axles can take, but I do know the robot was made to be able to run while dragging several dead motors. I'm not sure how much of the original redundancy they thought up is still there, but it should actually be able to continue operating even if more than 1/3 of the robot is completely destroyed.

Whoa! A picture of BABS just got put up - it's an electric four-bar flipper!
http://www.buildersdb.com/botpics/7704.jpg
That's going to be a nasty one to beat - if Falcon was any indication, the entire thing is grade 5 titanium. Dark Horse choice indeed...

Yeah, they had what looked like a 2D sketch. I guess they decided on an alternate design. Everyone's going to have to look out for this one - I know first-hand how effective flippers are. Pretty much until that robot has been eliminated from competition, no spinner is safe.

funny we've never had a problem with any flipper....

IMO BABS has alot of resemblance to BioHazard, think it has the effectiveness, bots have evolved alot since then (ex. megabyte owning biohazard at robogames)

For one, every flipper in the 120 lb high school class so far has been pneumatic (which in my opinion are crap, since you only get 5 attempts to flip the robot at most, even considering their power). As for Biohazard & Megabyte, there's always a new defense you can make. X-Contamination was for the most part made of very weak materials compared to other robots, and yet it held up incredibly well. Falcon, which will be competing in the college 120s this week, has a similar armor layout and has never lost a flap to a spinner, ever. I'd just say to be on your guard when fighting this thing.

Yeah, you guys are fine Razz. It's just the non-invertible people that have to worry.

Of course I've seen it, it's in every single one of their videos. Although self-righting is often irrelevant for robots that work fine upside down (even if it's easier to drive them right side up).

Often drums may be able to run upside down but theres drums only go one direction, making it very relevant
