Since I've been around a bunch of guys who make micro electric vehicles and through that learned that this is surprisingly widespread (mostly with DIY electric bike conversions), I've found out that the ESCs used for these vehicles are surprisingly awesome and cheap.

Chief among these are the Chinese-made Sensorless e-Bike Controllers which (depending on what model you buy), are capable of driving a sensorless brushless motor from a dead stop under significant loads. Since he's already explained them far better than I can, take a look at Charles Guan's unboxing and investigation of these controllers:
