also, i found another possible motor to use (i'm not doing direct-drive, i did more digging and people said they WILL break)
http://www.bphobbies.com/view.asp?id=V001105&pid=U117989

though many people have said it has very flimsy leads...and google sketch won't let me resize lines...blegh.

well it says the motor shaft will have about 300 rpm at 6v, and i'm going to be giving it 11v...the velocity should be around 500 rpm giving about .5 foot/second. isn't that fast enough?

huh, that's a little faster than i thought...shoulda used a calculator. and the extra 2v shouldnt be a problem, they're only going to be drive motors, and its a FBS, i need to be able to control it, and if it goes too fast, the gyro affect will start messing with it. but i do want to be able to control its steering, and faster motors makes it very hard to precisely control that. especially for a diagonal opposite motor setup.

@ the video: what motors and voltage are you using? gilbert looks like the speed i want out of mine...am i thinking this all wrong..? crap this is getting off-topic

oh! ok, here's a relevant question: what should my ground clearance be? with the 1/2 inch dia. wheels, i get about 1/16" clearance. should it be more? i know most arenas are wood floors.

1/8 in would be the minimum that i would go

well then, i guess i need 3/4 in. or 1 in. wheels for im not sure how much clearance... its .2" from the center of the shaft to the bottom of the gearbox, and add the thickness of the bottom plating (let's say 1/32"), 1/2 = no clearance, 3/4 will give me 1/8 clearance...

k...so it turns out 1/2 in. wheels leave no clearance. at all.. lol. so for a nice 1/8" clearance, i'll need 3/4" wheels. and assuming i have to put screws on the bottom, there goes the 1/8... 1 inch wheels it is, for 1/8" clearance from most screws.

Have you even driven a bot before to compare a speed to? It takes alot more then just driving an RC car a few times

@ cody, no, but I'll have lots of practice time when i get it made. probably use up the lifetime charge cycles of the battery.

@ koolaid: i'm not sure yet, since there are so many different ways i COULD make it, and out of so many different materials. A casting would be nice, if i could make a nice, cheap mold. i could use old cans of beans or something, with a most likely CNC machined top piece. or i could machine the whole thing on a lathe, though i will have to wait on those, because my school is renovating its fablab this summer, open to the community, and supposedly the most high-tech for a high school in the country. till then, I'm just not sure how to make it cheaply, but with quality.

and atm i have a pliers, a drill, and a handsaw... Neutral

Your best bet is to probably do a top piece and a band and have someone weld it for you

im going to recommend you try something other then a fbs then. not saying that you can't do it just that building a fbs is an extremely difficult thing to do even when you have the proper tools. maybe just an overhead bar spinner for now. it would definitely save you a lot of time, effort, and money.
