What other cool projects do y'all work on in the other parts of the year?
Here is some of my stuff.

Here is the last full size human project we completed before I left Hanson Robotics

just about all the electronics and a lot of the mechanical design on Zeno was done by me

Of course robots are not the only thing I enjoy building. We melted a piece off our camera taking video of our first attempt at a liquid fueled rocket engine

And who dosn't like a good breech-loading t-shirt launching robot cannon? Even if the video quality is terrible...

The kids over at RHS did a phenomenal job this year in FIRST. they made their robot use calculus to maximize traction and pushing power on a slippery surfaces. The car manufacturers could learn from this design because it is more efficient. I don't deserve any credit for that one though. That was all Steven and Alex.

those humanoid robots look really cool... REALLY cool...

when i'm not in season, I record music. heavy metal. full songs that I write myself, then record with me playing every necessary instrument... it's pretty cool.

and i do a lot of athletic stuff...

nothing too exciting.

that's a pretty good attempt at a liquid rocket engine! I play sports in my off time.. sleep.. build robots.. dream about robots.. build things in general.. up until this past summer, I was building a car with my dad; Caterham CSR. This summer I'll be "interning" with Tyler Bond @ Syntheon, a biomedical company that just so happens to be where my father and a whole lot of people that I've grown up knowing and talking to, work! Team Loki, from the original Battlebots show, was made up of people who worked there at one point in time, 2 or 3 of which still do! uhh.. what else do I do?... I post rambling comments on robotics forums apparently.. I like to go out boating.. swimming.. and everything here and there..

I play hockey, lots and lots of hockey
I ride/race quads and dirtbikes (cross country on quad and hair scramblers on my dirtbike)
I build cars, my dad and i have been working on a 1970 dodge challenger for a few years now and im also helping my best friend build his jeep, its a 91 wrangler were putting 2 in shackle lift, 4 in suspension lift, 2 in body lift, 35 or 36 in tires, dana 40 axles with front lockers, bumpers, winch, snorkel and all kinds of off roading goodies
My other plan for the past few summers is to build a turbojet gokart from a CAT diesel turbo(no waste gates) Ive been slowly aquiring the pieces its just a matter of actually getting around to do it.

I don't really do anything with robotics over the summer (although I want to...just don't have any supplies or anything...). I do a lot of what you call "Xtreme" sports...I skateboard, wakeboard, surf, snowboard, skate, bike, and freerun. I am the process of making a film with a couple friends that is pretty much like Jackass. It is called Attempted. We haven't started yet but we have written skits and ideas and planned them out. I have a boating license so I try to go boating every other weekend. We have 2 boats. A 38.7 foot Midnight Express. I am in love with it. We also have a small Scout boat (I am not sure of the actual size at it is new...probably around 8 feet) that we use to go wakeboarding and tubing and fishing. It is pretty much my boat but i drive the Midnight around more often. So now that i have mentioned what I like to do, you probably know now why I have a broken arm!!

Hmm... when I'm not making robots I'm usually working on something else or playing teh videogames. "Something else" ranges from:
-homework (in the school year)
-reading (current record is 10 books in 10 days)
-drawing
-exercising (the 1996 Olympics were in Atlanta, so Tech has what used to be the aquatic sports venue that they revamped and turned into the campus recreation center. IT'S GINORMOUS. It also means my school has a water slide Very Happy)
-growing carnivorous plants (yes, I have kept a venus flytrap alive for more than a week, and many other plants that are much more difficult to grow)
-designing other random contraptions (I'm going to put an entry into the "Inventure Prize" at Tech this fall, so that's most of what I'll be working on this summer. Winner gets $5K, a free patent filing (about $20K), and a paid internship to market their invention.)

2 things:
1. please elaborate.
2. I'm gonna say this for the second time on this forum: Pics or it didn't happen.

Not to sound skeptical or anything, I just wanna see some of these plants.

Sure, I'll probably have some good photos up tomorrow (better lighting). Here's my current list of what I've got growing:

Sundews:
Drosera capensis (very easy to grow, originates from South Africa)
Drosera capillaris (easy to grow, originates from Southeast USA)
Drosera binata (easy to grow, originates from Australia/New Zealand)
Drosera nitidula x pulchella (easy to grow, originates from Australia)
Drosera nitidula x occidentalis (moderate difficulty, originates from Australia)
Drosera burmanni (easy to grow, originates from Australia/Southeast Asia)
Drosera intermedia (easy to moderate difficulty, the particular variety I grow originates from Cuba)

Venus Flytraps:
Dionea nuscipula (moderate difficulty, originates from southeastern North Carolina & northeastern South Carolina)

North American Pitcher Plants:
Sarracenia minor (easy to grow, originates from Southeastern USA)
Sarracenia leucophylla (moderate difficulty, originates from Southeastern USA)
Sarracenia x 'Judith Hindle' (easy to moderate difficulty, hybrid plant)

Tropical Pitcher Plants:
Nepenthes x mixta (moderate difficulty, Victorian Era Hybrid)

Butterworts:
Pinguicula primuliflora (very easy to grow, originates from Southeastern USA)

Bladderworts:
Utricularia livida (very easy to grow, originates from South Africa & Mexico)

Also, apparently there's more than one kind of Venus Flytrap (Dionea muscipula) which one is yours? Or does it not have an "official" name?

Nope, there is only one species. There are a LOT of varieties that have been grown with different characteristics though. I've got the "typical" variety right now, it's been going strong for about three years now. The other varieties I know of are "Red Dragon" (very dark all-red plant), B52 (grows the biggest traps possible), "sawtooth" (the little 'teeth' are greatly shortened), "dente" (again, another variety with the teeth), a ton of other variations on "sawtooth" & "dente", "all-green" (whole plant is green), "clumping cultivar" (a variety that forms clumps of many plants), "cup trap" (a variety with a mutated trap shape), and I think that about covers it.

I knew that they were all the same species, when I said kind, I meant same species but different characteristics. Neutral

lol, no Dan, I'd have to grind you into the consistency of fish flakes, sprinkle them evenly onto the traps, and then wait about a week for any apparent digestion to occur. The biggest one has caught and killed a few lizards before though... (pitfall style trap - it drowned them. It did manage to digest them though - bones and all)
