PostSubject: Feigao Shaft snapping issue   Thu Mar 01, 2012 5:33 pm

Well.....my students got their weapon spinning up today and within four impact hits they snapped the Feigao shaft on the motor. Their set-up is a Feigao motor with a timing pulley set-up from shaft to weapon pulley. They have made an inset for the timing pulley so it will fit the Feigao's small .125" shaft but again....snap. The Feigao shaft inside the motor is 5mm which would be perfect size but as of now I have no real concrete ideas on how to get e bite on the 5mm shaft at all. Any ideas on how to deal with this?

HOW did you snap the shaft?!?! I've never even heard of that problem.
We've never even bent one. What weight is it? And do you run the timing belt inverted to let it slip on hits?

Either you had the belt way to tight... Or some other stuff that you did contributed because I can't imagine that happening.

You should just be able to make a slight flat spot or two on the motor shaft and then use 2 set screws at a right angle on it to hold the insert. We've used a similar method for all of our robots and we never had an issue in the aspect you're speaking of.

Can't say we ever had a problem with those motors in 150+ matches with some of the biggest hits te 15lb class hass seen
We made a hub to step up from the shaft to hub diameter and set screwed it to the shaft

Might have just been a belt issue with being too tight but also we are running the teeth down so their might have been too much torque on impact. Would you suggest running hte belts inverted so they slip? Also do you think it is possible to pull out inner magnet of the Feigao, flip the entire thing around so the 5mm end is no sticking out on the pulley section of the motor and replacing the rear bearing with a bearing that has the same OD but a .125 ID for the small end of the shaft? Any other thoughts

I would suggest inverting the belt if possible. It will also cause less resistance at high speeds.

As for tampering with the motor... That is all on you. I have no clue what's feasible.
