I don't personally have a waterjet, but my friend does and it is amazing. It can cut everything so fast and so precise, it's scary. It costs a little money to run but it works beautifully.

I love the pile of mystery metal, because you never know what treasures you'll find. Like the perfect material for your robot that would other wise cost hundreds of dollars, and is extremely hard to find.

I think half of my robot is made from mystery metal. Sad really.

Copperhead's drum is mystery metal... we found it in a scrapyard as a big fat piece of steel pipe. Lo and behold, it pwns. It is SOO abrasive to all cutting tools though... we had to buy special carbide end mills and countersinks to do all the holes in it because it dulled our other stuff within two or three holes.

but people still ask if it's really made of copper.....

*sigh*

We should just reply:
"Yep. Ultra Low Density Copper"

Mystery Metal is awesome. We have a 15lb shell spinner, I don't know if they're calling it Revolution, X-Revolution, Revolutions, or some combination of those. It's shell was bought at an aircraft scrap yard for around $150. It's some kind of titanium (it's something like 1/8th of an inch thick), the part was probably originally located in the combustion chamber of a small jet engine. The thing was a bitch to cut down to the right height, it took something like two days and 30 angle grinder blades. On the other hand, I don't think it's ever really been damaged in competition. We use the leftover bit that was cut off to test spinning weapons without having to worry about destroying the target.

Where did you find an aircraft scrap yard? I may need to do some exploring myself...
It would be so cool to design a bot around something that you find in an aircraft scrap yard....

I know there's a huge aircraft scrapyard in Tucson, Az. Unfortunately it's owned by the local airforce base aka the government, and as a result is behind barbed wire fences. It does after all have predominantly military aircraft like f-15s and even a few f-117s.

I'll ask around and see what I can find out. From what I remember, the guy who was making it got the part in the vicinity of Miami International Airport; I think he mentioned there were a ton of these parts lying around, but he only needed one. I'm willing to bet any large airport has some repair facilities near it for some kinds of aircraft, hence the scrapyards. They might just be normal scrapyards close enough to airports to be able to snag some aircraft parts as well.

I know we have the Sarasota-Bradenton Int'l Airport literally within walking distance of our shop, but I never thought about trying to find out if there was a scrapyard nearby...

I figured it out! I thought Emissary42 was Schimmel @ first, but soon realized that it's Landrum, so sorry Jeff!

Anyways, the ring was bought at Simmons Surplus Stainless, if I recall correctly. They are constantly receiving dead jet engines over their. Also, we've come up with this burning suspicion that the ring is in fact a super exotic steel alloy, and not titanium.. but it sure sparks like Ti doesn't it?!

my dad, an engineer, says Ti sparks white, but some stainless steel alloys spark white too, so it's likely a stainless alloy if you got it from a stainless place lol

I've come to agree with you guys on that part, actually. Tyler, go here: https://battlebots.forumotion.com/general-discussion-f7/introduce-yourself-t40.htm

and post something resembling these:
