| well actually scar 2 was the same bot as last year. but we designed scar 2 like 2 months before prelims and got it all put together after finals were over. and it has a lot of problems. it works, but its way overweight. So were trying to make a drum where the weapon motor is inside the drum itself. So the footprint is way smaller. | |

It works great for little bots but not so much in 15lbs Unless you completly customize the motor like jamo has A team from Meadville has done it in there bot that was machined from a solid piece to Worked great for a little bit, then they didn't have a drum at all That's assuming you plan on pressing An outrunner in similar to how they do in beetles and not a large drum thats belt driven like fluffy Keep maintenance in mind and being able to easily fix/replace your drum as well

| I actually have a belt drive like fluffy, but i saw that their drum failed a lot. so im trying to make a very durable design. I thought of the outrunner idea but i didnt think it would be strong enough. i have a fiago (spelling) motor in my desing so far. | |

| I think fluffy had a timing belt and that stripped a lot. ive used vbelts a lot so i think ima stick with those. | |

| What do you think about using steel tube for the drum shaft? Just for weight. | |

| Nice to see that I am not alone in starting designs for 2012-2013 year early. I started work on a new design for Plum's 2012-2013 year a bit before this year's prelims. (Done most of the designing at home) | |

| The other team said it wants to think about it for the summer. They might think of something different.... The other team is improving on this years design. Frame is built. Motors, gearboxes in ( needed improvements). And it drives. Armor is done in thin scrap sheet metal, weapon is drawn, now the small things. Never fails though, we willing be rushing at the end in 340 + days to get it done. | |

I never thought I'd feel behind with my intention of getting the design done by summer, and frame cut over the summer.....

Your statement, and Alex's make me really happy college teams can't compete at SWPA botsIQ, if they could Plum would really be in trouble.....

| I've been working on our 2012-2013 bot for a while now as well. Currently working on some Solidworks components.
Seeing as our program is still in its infancy, we don't have many previous designs to go off of, and we still don't have Solidworks in our computer lab so most of the work gets done here at home. (I actually am still using my 60 day student trial which mysteriously keeps renewing itself)

| We don't want to start ours too early and then have too much spare time next year, like we already did this year.. Too many things need to be done in the school during the last few Weeks of school anyways... That being said, we Do have several ideas already drawn up, and half of a wooden frame built.. The rest will come after I decide for sure this summer if were doing another asymmetrical beater, or an undercutter. | |

You know you're living a pretty good life when you have an excess of free time.

| The way I see it; the longer we wait, the less time we have to needlessly take it apart out of boredom and risk damaging something. That was a lesson my team learned the hard way this year. | |

Sounds more like a team management issue more than a time management issue. Personally I just keep the underclassmen as far away from the robot as possible.
