Hey Everyone,

The NRL Rules committee will be meeting over the summer to consider changes to the competition rules and technical regulations.

So, if there is an NRL rule that you feel is unfair, or complicated, or in some other way subpar, please leave a comment below and let me know.  Be sure to include your suggestion for what the updated rule should be as well as your rationale for the change.

I can't promise that every rule change requested will be made, but the team will review all the input we get.

Thanks!

Maureen

I'm wondering what the actual criteria for grand champion was. I know there was a little said about it in the packet but I don't really remember, could you clarify it for me.

Sure.  The page in the packet goes into detail (let me know if you need another copy) but the basic idea is that the Grand Champion score is a combination of your average competition score, average engineering score and documentation score.  Each element weighs evenly.

For competitions scores you get 10 points for matches you win, 9 points for matches you lose by judge's decision and 8 points for matches you lose by knockout.

Each of the three judges gives you an engineering score every time you compete and those totals are averaged to get to your engineering score.

Your documentation score is not averaged, it's just based directly on the one score you get in that area.

Which ever team has the highest total score after adding those three areas is the grand champion.

Does that help?

o   Sorry it took me so long to reply it kind of slipped my mind. It appears that you're trying to make all three categories equally weighted, but they are not. Documentation is weighted heavier than competition because in competition you can lose every match by knock out and score an eight whereas in documentation you can get as low as a zero. I would be fine with this rule if I was told upfront that documentation is weighted heavier than competition. But as it is now I am led to believe that all are equally weighted.
o   As for a rule change suggestion, if you are trying to make them all equally weighted maybe like a zero if they never make it to the arena 3 if they lose by knock out 4 if they lose by judge’s decision 8 if they win by judge’s decision and 10 if they win by knockout.  Or try to make it so that you have the same range of possible scores for each category.
o   In the engineering category, the criteria for how robots are scored seems very subjective. It would be nice to see some sort of score card to see how the judges came up with who the overall winner is.
o   I would also like to see the criteria for damage, control, and aggression better defined.

Thanks, Kevan,

I've copied your suggestions and will include them in the conversation the rules committee has later this month.  Thanks for taking the time to provide such thoughtful feedback.
