Thanks to BabyDork reminding me and inspiring me to make this thread..

Tell of your bot's horror/funny/embarassing tales that are not seen in the arena!

It was the early days of building Redemption and we just got the outside plates back, and we had the prototype (crappy) Haynes 282 weapon. We already pressed in bearings into the outside plates, and we mounted the weapon in. Having NEVER had such a big weapon we were in need to hit stuff. But since we had NO drive train of the weapon or even a way to hold it in, We devised a plan...

Me and a classmate each braced our foot on a outside plate. Then the third classmate (who is in the army now.. think about that... Very Happy) wrapped some flexible wire around the exposed shaft. He then ran away while holding the rest of the wire. Thus spinning the weapon up to about 1,000rpm.

Your's truly took a old inner plate from WartHawg and dropped it into the top of the weapon. It shot up past our faces and into the ceiling. To describe the sound. Imagine non-heat treated Haynes 282 hitting a VERY pocketed out piece of Titanium that had a thickness of .090 in the pockets..

Of course we all dropped from laughter....

I have many many more stories.. hahahaha

Well I can't say it was in school, but there's a part of the outside of the building where our shop was that was eaten by copperhead...

Let's just say that, if you are making an air cannon, you should wait till the glue dries before pressurizing

Loud boom . . flying object 6 inches from a Mom's head. . .big dent in the plaster behind her.

One of the stories that i was told as a freshman about roflcopter:

Apparently the LS team was pulling an allnighter in an attempt to get bots done b4 they had to ship, when they finally got Roflcopter done at 2 am, they decided to test it, and since they did not know what to expect they were scared to test in the building, they threw the bot in a truck and went down to the tennis courts used car head lights to light the caged court and stood behind the fence for saftey moments later 3 police cars pull in. THEY thought it was a knife fight

I am really starting to loathe freshman. this kid apparently wanted to make a salad bowl out of a log he found in his backyard. He apparently tried to bore it out with a 3'' bit on the drill press UNFREAKINGCLAMPED the bit get stuck and the 15-20lb log starts spinning off balanced and Bends the entire spindle on the press, fortunatly the woodshop teacher was there to save his life, kid waits 5 mins walks into the robotics room(adjacent to the wood shop) and tries the same thing on the metal drill press SAME RESULT because he forgot the clamp again. NOW I have to wait till next week to drill holes in my robot

It was Senior year. Last football year of the season. The robotics team was firing t-shirts into the stands with our automated robotic t-shirt cannon led by myself and WeirdAl. It was a dark, cold and windy night. Last 2 minutes of the game and we were down by 20+ points (our school wasn't known for sports). With so little time and so many t-shirts, we decided to do a rapid assault of t-shirts on the crowd. Doing our best to lay waste to our current supply of ammo that would be useless in just a short time.

As we proceeded to fire t-shirts 5-10 a minute. We had successfully turned the crowds attention to us instead of the horrific football massacre which resulted in a uproar of fans cheering "OVER HERE! SHOOT OVER HERE!" "BA BOOB, BA BOOM" went the cannon. It was great, the t-shirts were flying, the crowd was cheering, and we had almost ran out of ammo. But with seconds remaining, I noticed we had 3 shirts left. Hurriedly I filled the cannon with all three, and raised the barrel as high as it would go. It was go time. I counted down in synchronization with the game clock. 3-2-1 FIRE! BA..."wait, what happened" we thought to ourselves. ...BOOOOOOOM! The t-shirts flew out of the cannon, past the fans and over the bleachers, into the parking lot behind them. A second later, the pvc barrel EXPLODED! Shrapnel flying everywhere. Tiny, harmless pieces but shrapnel nonetheless.

Unaware of this at the time, but the constant firing of the cannon led to compression and expansion of the pvc. The pvc used was not regulated for pressure (as it is a special order from Home Depot and not readily available), and the frequent expansion of the pvc caused it to freeze and on the last firing of the cannon, it gave.

Although I was not the first to break the cannon, my behind was thoroughly chewed out and I was never allowed to fire it again. No hard feelings, but as a result of this event (and a few others that happened in my presence) if anything was to go wrong in robotics, even if I wasn't at school, I am blamed for it. I guess I deserve it.

In case you haven't seen the cannon: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6BkoIaFOdqc
