Cleaning Brushed Motors

I just stumbled across how to clean a brushed DC Motor on You Tube...

Never Knew that this was the way to prevent arcing and to seat the brushes better against the armature.

Going to try this with some old motors before I truely believe the water submersion trick..

Seems kinda lame. I think a good shot of WD-40, followed up with compressed air would do as much or more. I guess it does beat trying to take one apart (or the real challenge-putting it back together!)

But hey, I've never tried it, so I guess I shouldn't knock it.

I used to do the submerge in water thing all the time when breaking in new motors when I raced slot cars. Seemed to work well. From what I recall it basically sped up the break in process. (eg, less running time at low voltage to get the brushes to seat properly)

Y'know, I musta been a bad mood. It seems like a decent sort of thing to try--cheap and harmless at worst, and maybe it works really well. What do I know, really?
