A guy has successfully built a 16-Bit Arithmetic Logic Unit inside of Minecraft. If I had to guess, that's between a quarter square mile to a full square mile of space that it occupies in-game:

I know, I know, it's not surprising. It's just cool that we've finally confirmed that we found one (outside of the one we're currently sitting on). There are several hundred that are still being double-checked that the Kepler satellite has spotted so far.

The other planets previously found in the Gliese 581 system turned out to be on the edges of the habitable zone (which drastically drops the probability of life on them). This one is right in the middle of that zone, hence the excitement.

You know the faceplates? The ones with the really fine engraved lettering? That would be my handiwork (and dughi's) on the HAAS. 0.008" diameter endmills are tricky to machine with very quickly.

I'm taking Kinematics and Dynamics next semester which is where I assume we will learn how to design gears and the such, but those look awesome. What about the efficiency though? There 'work' but wouldn't circle gears be the most constant?
And who wants to go to mars? ...wait, will there be alien girls? Sign me up!
