He's a TSA adviser/teacher at North Allegheny High School here in Pittsburgh. He's my girlfriends uncle and I started talking to him at christmas and threw talks I had asked him if he knew you and he said he did.
Now that you mentioned North Allegheny... It triggered my memory. His students have had some great CNC machining projects at the state and national TSA events. He was one of the people that got me involved in CNC routers/machining. He brought some things he does at school and I was totally impressed what the machines could really do... Educational vendors sell equipment, they don't know how they really function... So if this indeed was Shawn, then thank him for me... we would never have gotten into the things we have without a little push from his program.

He told me that he had introduced you into CNC and was also impressed with what you and your students have produced

as I said before, (and I am not part of this, just an advisor) , MLEC has some sponsorship....from what I know, the sponsors expect the partially sponsored bots to attend the 'national event' , which they currently see as the regionally/national BOTSIQ Nola thing.
Somehow, thru the school system, MLEC is sometimes able to come up with some money to cover entry fees to this event.
If MLEC doesn't attend this event, they get NO sponsorship and no money for entry fees.
Forgive me if this sounds a little rude, but that answer just doesn't make any sense to me.
You go to the competition because you would lose the money from your sponsor, but all the money from the sponsors goes to said competition...
In my opinion just save them there money, and compete in your youth fair and other cheaper priced event.
I understand that you have said that its not you decision, and that the school and sponsor makes the decision. But have you tried explaining the situation to said sponsor?
Let me try to clear this up a bit...
Again, from what I know....
1) MLEC has a few sponsors. They do not tell MLEC what they can spend the funds on, but the agreement is that MLEC will attend a national event....therefore we attend BotsIQ.
2) MLEC can get funding thru the school system to attend a national event, so they apply for it.
these are 2 different sources of funding.
Hope this clears things up a bit.

I find this funny--the venue had to change because the building was collapsing. Srsly. A bathroom caved in last week during the meeting with the city about the event.
Really can't blame Nola for that one!
And hey, the new venue is within walking distance of a half-dozen restaurants.
