today was my first big battlebots day working in the roboclub machine shop at school. I didn't do much first semester, and got Conundrum ready for GCRS4 over break, but I'm back in gear. I spent NINE HOURS in the shop today.

I've finished the drive motor mounts, the hubs for the wheels, and both supports for the weapon, as well as the weapon motor interface. Making progress. :]

At the expense of a Nature of Language assignment due tomorrow that I haven't even begun, I spent another 8-hour session in the shop. I was working on the disk this time. I started with a BIG chunk of aluminum. Probably 3 pounds. It's down to a little over a pound. I'll put pictures up when it's done. It's not quite there yet...

I may have been able to, but I would have had to step the entire hub of it over by a bit... and then the force would be a torsional (?) force on the bearings... more of a moment than I would have wanted. As it is, I'm offsetting the teeth by 1/16" to the side of the motor, so they'll overhang by 1/16 on the non-motor side and 3/16 on the motor side. Not much of a difference, but still. I was gonna do belts, but I opted for this so there was a little more logical space for components.

I'll make a few more hours of progress tonight... I think I'm gonna cut the carbon fiber front guarding and mount it. The teeth should be done in a few days (wire edm cut chisel tips). I'm also going to do something to ensure concentricity of the the motor and the disk. Not 100% sure what though yet.

I'll keep the updates coming cheers

looks cool, but the motors (even the drive) will probably break on the first epic hit. There is a lot of overhang. I know there is not much time left before moto, but I would really recommend trying to put the disk over the motor ala charles. He put up a nice instructable on how to build brushless motors.

I'm gonna hopefully be able to drive both...
The motor isn't actually attached to the disk - it's a keyed interface with a little bit of play, so it's not too bad. I would have tried to embed the motor in it, and I'm not entirely sure why I didn't, but we'll see what happens.

The disk needs to lose about 80g (should be really easy, but still needs to be done). I think I can take about 20g out of everything else. I should order a lighter battery...

The rules clearly state that only ONE driver per bot in the same weight class...you could drive an ant and a beetle, but not 2 ants.

I specifically asked Al or Jim, cause I have the 2 3's and maybe 2 12's and that's what they told me....if they let you guys each drive a pair per class, that would be unfair....no?

does that mean that every bot needs a dedicated driver? So if the one of mine that i was driving gets eliminated, there's no chance of me driving the other? Neutral

I would address that directly with Jim or Al..but I did hear that they were somewhat flexible or lax in some areas.

Post on the nerc forum at rfl...I feel the same way, that's why I recruited Josh....if your dad isn't going, you might want to recruit him or someone like him, in that we have no ants and he might be there on Friday, which is when the ants fight.

Dan

I just read the rules again...not very long read

Only 1 driver per bot....also, possibly of interest is that they claim that ant fights are only 2 minutes long...so you may be able to save a bit there, battery wise...

You really should go read the rules at least once....

i did last night, and sent Jim an email. I'm eagerly awaiting his reply. pig

I need to buy a different battery. Maybe the 430 mAh one I used in Conundrum at GCRS? I could buy another one of those. I'll look online for other options. I can definitely get away with a smaller battery - the one I was weighing stuff with weighs 47g!!
